Position Title:  Assistant Director of Development

Department:    Development

Reports to:       Vice President of Development

Nature of Work

The primary function of the Assistant Director of Development is to help procure financial support to meet immediate and long-term goals of the Everglades Foundation. Working with a staff of professionals, the Assistant Director of Development is a member of the department responsible for all fundraising activities, as well as the management and implementation of special events and development programs.

Responsibilities

• Assists the Vice President of Development to plan and manage a comprehensive fund-raising program, including annual and planned giving, capital campaign, grant writing, special events and database management.

• Indentifies, researches, cultivates, solicits and recognizes individual, corporate and foundation donors.

• Forms part of a professional and clerical staff engaged in fund-raising activities of the Foundation to assure that goals and objectives are attained.

• Assists in the recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of all development staff.

• Provides guidance and support to Foundation administrative and program staff in all matters relating to fund-raising, public and community relations programs and its response to constituent concerns.

• Assists the Vice President, the CEO and Board of Directors in institutional planning to identify immediate and long-term goals of the organization and to plan strategies to address those goals.

• Assists in preparing an annual strategic plan and budget for the total fund-raising program that supports the Foundation’s goals and objectives.

• Invites involvement of governing Board members, other volunteer leaders and prospective leaders in the affairs of the organization.

• Assists the Vice President and CEO in representing the Foundation, its programs, and its partners to the community and selected constituent groups through presentations to service, business, cultural, government, religious, social and civic organizations.

• Assists in organizing regional events across the state, including Sanibel-Captiva, Naples, Islamorada, Ocean Reef, Miami, Palm Beach, and Hobe Sound.

• Assists the Vice President in managing a reliable system of donor records, including timely gift acknowledgement and appropriate donor recognition.

• In coordination with the Senior Communications Director, promotes and develops an effective external donor communications program which enhances the Foundation’s image in the community, using Constant Contact, the Everglades Foundation website and other communication tools.

• Promotes understanding of and support for the Everglades Foundation’s mission by engaging and bringing constituents to events and functions, including the ForEverglades Benefit, tours of the Everglades, meetings, briefings and social functions.

• Participates in activities of professional fund-raising and environmental associations to be current in the field; assumes leadership roles in these organizations, where appropriate.

• Researches new ideas and techniques in order to enhance the Foundation’s fund raising efforts.

• Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of principles of business administration and management, including supervisory principles and practices.

• Knowledge of fund-raising principles and techniques of non-profit organization.

• Considerable knowledge of potential funding resources in the local community.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Strong interpersonal skills.

• Strong strategic planning and organizational skills.

• Ability to use fund-raising software program in forming fund-raising strategies.

• Ability to prepare and monitor annual departmental budgets.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.

• At least five years of experience in all facets of fund-raising in non-profit organizations, with progressively responsible managerial experience.

• Spanish-language skills preferred.

• Knowledge of South Florida preferred.

• Experience with or membership in environmental organizations useful.
