The Everglades Foundation has announced the 2024 recipients of its prestigious ForEverglades® Research Enhancement Grants, which support graduate students pursuing innovative scientific and economic research to advance the restoration and protection of America’s Everglades.
“As a science-based organization, The Everglades Foundation is honored to have received an exceptional number of applications from such promising students,” said Dr. Steve Davis, Chief Science Officer at The Everglades Foundation.
“The talent exhibited by this year’s applicants was so vast, it inspired us to include, for the first time, a series of honorable mentions, in addition to our eight awardees. Each of them holds the promise to help create solutions for a sustainable world.”
The range of research conducted by this year’s awardees reflects the many intricacies of the Everglades ecosystem, with projects exploring topics such as the impact of sea-level rise on coastal mangroves, coral reef restoration, ocean acidification, and the resilience of the system following fires, hurricanes, and drought.
Since the launch of The Everglades Foundation’s program 17 years ago, more than $2 million has been awarded to over 100 graduate students, most of them pursuing doctoral degrees. Awardees have gone on to pursue scientific careers as professors and researchers in universities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
This year’s class includes the highest number of out-of-state applicants, illustrating the expanding geographic reach and merit of the program. Three grant recipients are from Florida International University, and one each from Cornell University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Georgia Southern University, the University of California-Davis, and the University of Pennsylvania.
The ForEverglades Research Enhancement Grant program is a joint project between The Everglades Foundation and its partners and supporters, including Florida International University, Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, the Green Family Foundation, The Patrick P. Lee Foundation, VoLo Foundation, and The Woodbury Foundation.
