Palmetto Bay, Fla. – The Everglades Foundation today released the following statement, attributed to its CEO Eric Eikenberg, regarding the award of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir embankment contract.

“Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced the award of the EAA Reservoir embankment contract. This is a pivotal moment in the historic effort to restore America’s Everglades.

“Today’s news is a result of countless Floridians, from numerous cities and towns across our state who have demanded Lake Okeechobee water be stored, cleaned, and sent south to the Everglades and Florida Bay.

“The EAA Reservoir embankment contract is the largest in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers history and is worthy of celebration. The announcement is yet another indicator of the tremendous progress in our mission to restore and protect America’s Everglades.

“Once constructed, the EAA Reservoir will reconnect Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades and significantly reduce the harmful discharges to the coastal estuaries.

“The Everglades Foundation applauds the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the bipartisan support in Washington for their pivotal roles in advancing the construction of the EAA Reservoir.”
