On Saturday, September 28th, The Everglades Foundation hosted the 8th annual John & Nancy Marshall Everglades Symposium at Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach. Themed “Art Inspired by the Everglades,” the event’s distinguished, creative speakers discussed how the beauty of America’s Everglades inspires their work.
American wildlife photographer and Communications Director of Miami-Dade Zoological Park, Ron Magill, served as keynote speaker, and was joined by the 2023 Green Family Foundation ForEverglades Fellow Paige Kleindl, Ph.D. candidate at Florida International University’s Institute of Environment, and Artist, Muralist, Illustrative Designer & Brand Collaborator Kate Lynn Lewis. The three discussed how they connect science and conservation work to art while raising awareness about the importance of the Everglades.
Restoration of America’s Everglades is vital to South Florida’s drinking water supply, the 2,000 species of plants and animals that inhabit the ecosystem, and Florida’s real estate, recreation, and tourism-based economy. Everglades restoration also represents the world’s largest ecosystem restoration project, and a model for the rest of the globe.
After John Marshall's passing in 2016, The Everglades Foundation honored his leadership and legacy by naming its annual symposium after him, as well as his wife, Nancy, who serves as a member of the Board of the The Everglades Foundation, and continues to play a leadership role in the symposium.
