Palmetto Bay, Fla. October 7, 2019 — Eric Eikenberg, CEO of The Everglades Foundation, today issued the following statement regarding Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ announcement of the early termination of the Florida Crystals lease on acreage designated for the stormwater treatment area component of the Everglades Reservoir.
“Thanks to Governor Ron DeSantis’ determined leadership, what began as a post-Election Day double-cross by Florida Crystals and the former South Florida Water Management District board to complicate construction of the Everglades Reservoir has instead now forged a path for its groundbreaking.
“Today’s announcement will enable construction to begin on the essential stormwater treatment area adjacent to the new reservoir so that the entire project can be completed on the expedited schedule set forth by Governor DeSantis.
“With no contractual impediments remaining, it is now increasingly urgent for Congress to approve full $200 million per year funding for Everglades restoration projects, including the Everglades Reservoir.”
