Statement of Everglades Foundation on Governor’s Budget Proposal
“It’s up to us to tell the Legislature to Follow the Governor’s Lead”
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla— Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg has issued the following statement in reaction to the budget recommendation issued yesterday by Governor Ron DeSantis:
“Year after year, Florida has endured toxic algae — blue-green algae in our estuaries, red tide in our oceans. All the while, our Everglades has suffered from cycles of drought and pollution.
“By the millions, Floridians have said, ‘enough.’ They flooded Tallahassee with tens of thousands of emails, and they flooded the ballot box last November with demands for action.
“On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, the staff, and supporters of The Everglades Foundation, I want to congratulate our new Governor, Ron DeSantis, on today’s budget recommendation of $625 million to address Florida’s water crisis including more than $300 million for Everglades restoration. He promised he’d listen, and that his administration would do something about it.
“Today, Ron DeSantis proved himself as good as his word. Now, it’s up to the Florida Legislature to follow his lead.”
