Yesterday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced an award of $197 million to advance the Indian River Lagoon South’s C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area Project.
“While more storage is needed throughout the ecosystem, this project takes a first step at storing and cleaning local runoff and improving the St. Lucie Estuary,” said Dr. Thomas Van Lent, Everglades Foundation Director of Science and Policy.
“We are delighted to see progress being made on this important restoration project that protects waterways, fishing and way of life for businesses and families along the Indian River Lagoon,” said Senior Policy Advisor Dawn Shirreffs.
Construction of the final phase of the 3,400-acre, 16.5 billion gallon reservoir is expected to begin this winter. Completion is anticipated in 2020.
